If we don’t see something on television, hear it on the radio or read it in the paper—it didn’t happen. – WAND (Women’s Actions for New Directions)
Recognize the media as an indispensable tool for changing the world. When there’s an issue you want others to know about, WRITE ABOUT IT. When your world vision is bursting from you, GET AN INTERVIEW. When you’re having an event to educate your community, SEND OUT A PRESS RELEASE. Ask questions, urge actions, educate and inspire. Taking action yourself is powerful, but inviting your community to join you magnifies your strength a thousand fold. Plus there’s nothing more impressive to show your elected leaders than a published Letter to the Editor (LTE) or Op-Ed; now you’ve proven yourself to be A Force To Be Reckoned With (yikes). Writing your first LTE is scary and during your first radio interview your mouth will be too dry to talk, BUT it all gets easier – in fact it gets irresistible because you’re acting on your beliefs.
Attracting media attention is simply not that difficult when you’re acting up – so you’re in luck. Almost everything you do as a Mother Acting Up is a photo-op waiting to happen: mothers, others and children meeting with Senators, Girlcotts in front of Fair Trade Stores, events with costumes and a mother or two on stilts. Take advantage of this allure. Whenever you create an event, call your local paper and tell them. You’re making history: talk about it.
