Mothers* are acting up, out and often on a wide range of issues from those right in front of our noses (halting a new coal-fire power plant or providing healthy school lunches) to those impacting millions of children we might never meet (requesting foreign aid funding to educate children orphaned due to HIV/AIDS or conflict.)
Here is the beginning of the MOTHER OF ALL AGENDAS—written on behalf of children everywhere. Add/delete/change it to make it yours. This Mother Agenda is divided into 3 areas:
Champion the end of poverty
Nearly every other child on the planet lives in poverty. We have the resources, the technology and the ability to put poverty in a museum. What we need is the political will. By tackling one issue at a time, we can start building the political will.
Preserve the planet
Our children breath the same air, drink from the same finite pool of clean water and will suffer disproportionately from climate change. We have only ONE earth to give to our children. Are we making resource choices—personally and politically—that reflect the long-term needs of generations to come? Time for a mother’s perspective.
Promote child security
Children account for over half of the 34 million refugees and displaced people in the world. When we go to war, whether in response to terrorism or to protect foreign interests, we rarely consider the long term implications for children and their families. Our leaders need to read the wise words of Julia Ward Howe spoken in 1870. Â By focusing on human security, we might just make war obsolete.
