A I am very fortunate in that, in my job, I am able to spend time sitting around kitchen tables, or on stools around open fires, with mothers from different places, countries, cultures. While our discussions are often sobering—I just talked for hours with a women in rural Mexico about the countless miscarriages that she endured—exuberance always prevails when we end with a hug, a mutual sharing and acceptance.

Q What issue are you embarrassed you don’t know more about?
A The biggest thing that I do is lead “100 Book Day” every year with my son, Finn. We founded this event in 2009. The mission of the initiative is to use reading and spending time together as a way to raise awareness, generate resources, promote literacy, and have fun. Finn is shaped in three wonderful ways by this event: he self-identifies as a “reader”; he has a vision beyond his community that there are kids out there who don’t have books to read or someone to read to them; and he knows that he has the power to create change.

Q What moment did you first feel moved to take a public action, and begin your journey as an activist?
A In all honesty—I am not just saying this because I’m on the MQ—it was during my first Vocal Empowerment Workshop with Beth Osnes. Before that I didn’t know that I could be the one to actually do something to create change. The moment I expressed my most passionate concern—and what I could do about it in the next 4 weeks—I gave myself permission to be the activist, the change-maker that I so admired in other women.

Q A friend leaves an excited message asking you to join her in an action. What do you hope it is? What do you pray it isn’t?
A I hope it’s something that I can bring my son to … and something that is joyful. I also hope it has something to do with art or literacy. Or women’s rights. I feel terrible about this, but I hope it’s not about climate change. While I am not passionate about this issue, I AM passionate about the people who work on it tirelessly!

Q How do you benefit the world’s children? Does it involve contributing to individual lives or changing systems, or both?
A I start at home, at my friend’s homes, and at my son’s school by extending compassion to the children that I know and meet—and I try to volunteer in ways that benefit them whenever possible. I am fortunate that my work with the Philanthropiece Foundation allows me to work on programs that support the education, health, and general wellbeing of children in Latin America. As a Global Grassroots Board Member, I am proud to contribute to changing systems for women and children in Rwanda—building their self-sufficiency to create change in their communities for example via a clean water source, domestic violence education, adequate school bathrooms for girls, literacy, etc.

Q What challenges have you encountered in your work that caused you to stumble a bit but taught you a wickedly useful lesson?
A My biggest challenge is having too many things on my plate—work, life, family, exercise, etc. My most useful lesson: breathe deeply and go snuggle up on the couch with my son and a book. That seems to ease everything.

Q You’ve just been given a $5 million grant to “Change the World For Children’s Sake!” What do you do with it?
A I would invest $1 million dollars each in five grassroots organizations whose programs focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency. Who would those orgs be? Hmmm … at the moment: Global Grassroots, Reading Village, Limitless Horizons Ixil, El Porvenir and Educate!

Q After reading this, other mothers share your passion! What are the 3 most compelling, creative, blow-your-skirt-up, want-to-do-it-right-now ACTIONS they can take to get involved?
I am a voracious current events reader. I feel that it’s important to know what is happening in the world. But, it is also necessary to not let those big issues emotionally paralyze me. I respond by donating my photographic services to local non-profits in my area; there are many people doing incredible work to help those in need. It is so rewarding to use my photography to visually show what good works are happening. It helps more people get involved and helps provides much needed funding for these great organizations.

My hope lies in the small part that we as individuals can play in a child’s life. There are so many parents, teachers, and neighbors that are part of our children’s everyday lives. If we can all support the children in our lives in whatever ways we can as individuals, we can be part of a great network of adults that can guide these children to make the most of their lives and to be happy people.

Q Which mother leaders or activists inspire you and why?
These people are my mentors. My grandmother for being a great listener. She has always been someone that I can talk to. My friend and former boss, Sharon Smith who despite her debilitating fight with Multiple Sclerosis has always been an upbeat and positive person and an incredible photographer. Among her many projects, she has donated her gorgeous photography to help the homeless in Chicago. My former photography teacher, John H. White. One of his many words of advice is, “Look for the good in everyone. Never misjudge people. Everyone has a song“. And of course, my own Mother and Father who have always encouraged my questions and activism.

Q You have an opportunity to meet with the President on behalf of the world’s children. What single request do you make? What individual or group do you invite to join you, so you’re invincible and win the support of the White House?
A It is so difficult to pick one single request. But, I think the issue with the greatest influence is Education. If children have a quality education, it can teach them the way out of poverty. It can teach them medicine to heal the sick. It can teach them the advantages of a non-violent way of life. Education can teach children about the environment of our planet. Education can give them hope. An organization that seems to have had great success with educating kids to benefit their community is called Educate! They have provided an education to kids in Uganda that is a mixture of social entrepreneurship and leadership along with long term mentoring. If I had an opportunity to meet with the President, I would bring someone from Educate! to discuss their challenges and successes.

Q What issue are you embarrassed you don’t know more about?
Each stage that they go through is completely new and different. I’m amazed that I constantly feel like a ‘new’ parent! I continually rely on my own network of friends and family for advice. It truly does ‘take a village’ to raise our children, as Hillary Clinton said.

Q You’ve been chosen to be the face of Mothers Acting Up—celebrating mothers taking public action on behalf of the world’s children—to shine from the side of every bus in America. I also get them involved by bringing my children to local marches that will bring them awareness of issues. They have been on a Martin Luther King Jr. march, an anti-war rally and we all went to hear Barack Obama speak in Denver when he was running for President. These have had a big impact on my kids. It prompts some great family discussions. I want my kids to be aware of the troubles in the world around them, but I also want them to feel that they have the power to do something about them in their own way.

I worked as a volunteer for the the movement, and collected signatures from citizens to ban nuclear weapons. In college, I interned for NY State Governor Mario Cuomo. It was one of the best jobs I ever had; I really felt like I was in a position to help people in my state.

Q A friend leaves an excited message asking you to join her in an action. This is easier said than done. Often times adults come to a photo session with the weight of the world on their shoulders. I need to figure out how to get the adults to relax and have fun. Inside each and every adult, there is still that pure, joyful, playful spirit that they were as a child. It is my job to find it.

Q You’ve just been given a $5 million grant to “Change the World For Children’s Sake!” What do you do with it?
The mentors would be adults in the community that can volunteer time to show kids what they do at work, and help them with ideas about what they want to be when they grow up. The mentors would help give kids experiences that they wouldn’t normally be exposed to in their home and school environment. Kids could find out what a CEO does. How does a surgeon spend most of her time? How does an artist make a living? There would be another group of adults that help kids with homework. They would also help kids research colleges and figure out how to get accepted and pay for college. This program could start on a local level, but it could eventually work nationwide and worldwide. The goal of the program would be to enable kids to ‘think big’ for their life’s work and to work toward making that happen.

The question forced itself upon me, “Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters, to prevent the waste of that human life of which they alone bear and know the cost?” I had never thought of this before. The august dignity of motherhood and its terrible responsibilities now appeared to me in a new aspect, and I could think of no better way of expressing my sense of these than that of sending forth an appeal to womanhood throughout the world, which I then and there composed. … The little document which I drew up in the heat of my enthusiasm implored women, all the world over, to awake to the knowledge of the sacred right vested in them as mothers to protect the human life which cost them so many pangs. (Reminiscences page 328)

This shining woman is none other than the great, great, great, great, granddaughter of Julia Ward Howe, Kate Stickley. Generously giving us the pleasure of peering into the thoughts of Julia through her writings—Kate has in essence let Julia answer the MQ. Imagine how we love that …

For everyone not fully introduced to Julia Ward Howe yet, she incited women to Arise! through a remarkable document entitled The Mother’s Day Proclamation. After the Civil War, Julia wrote in her journal, “Why do not the mothers of mankind interfere in these matters, to prevent the waste of that human life that they alone bear and know the cost?” That thought prompted her to write the proclamation, entreating women to create peace on a day she called, “Mother’s Day”. Thus began the holiday that in later years took a sharp right turn into hollandaise sauce and breakfast in bed.

This Mother’s Day, May 8th, Mothers Acting Up celebrates Julia Ward Howe with the launch of the MQs, inspiring mothers to act up, not solely for peace, but for all the issues we’re passionate about. Others promoting mother activism are: The Evolving Homemaker, Pundit Mom, Mamapalooza and Heather Hallagan’s Million Mom Tweet, Mamas For Peace. Yes; that’s what Julia was talking about!

Now, with great respect and in celebration of Mother’s Day, here is Julia Ward Howe’s Proclamation in all its revolutionary grandeur.

Mother’s Day Proclamation—1870

Arise then … women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
“We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”
From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.”
Blood does not wipe out dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace…
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God -
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

More about Julia has been compiled by Kate and her family at www.juliawardhowe.org.

p.s. The photo shows four generations: the baby is Kate’s mother’s great grandmother. The man is Kate’s father’s great great grandfather. The woman is Kate’s mother’s great great great grandmother. And the Grand Dame with the baby is Julia Ward Howe. Happy Mother’s Day!
