It takes courage to act on our concerns. Practicing that action can strengthen our courage.
This was a fantastic celebration of mothers and children coming together to reclaim Mother’s Day as a day of action! At the workshop on Saturday afternoon, there was one woman who was extremely grateful for the workshop as it gave her some skills she needed to launch a program she’s been planning—a dula service for low-income moms. Since she’s a nurse, she is well connected to organize such a program, but felt glad to gain some confidence and skills for selling the idea to others. Another woman, who was pregnant and about to become a mom for the first time, gained the courage and inspiration through the workshop to follow through with an issue that had really been bothering her. She had worked as a classroom assistant in a lower-income pre-school for two years. She felt that several of the teachers were too physically rough with the kids and had wanted to follow up with the authorities. She didn’t realize she could have a voice to advocate for these kids before the workshop, but in this safe and nurturing setting, she rehearsed her entire conversation with the principal and school board.
