“The shock is finally subsiding and I would love to find ways to make things better. Two of my nieces saw their dreams of being a doctor go down in the rubble. We worry about their chances now in Haiti in the years to come. Rebuilding colleges doesn’t seem like that will be the first priority … Unimaginable.” —From a MAU in Oregon with family in Haiti
“Haiti’s struggle is to survive; ours is not to forget.”—Closing line of an op-ed printed in the UK
Make a personal long-term commitment to Haiti by taking two handed actions:
With one hand: Start a Haiti change jar and donate everyday. Pledge to forgo a luxury and put that money in the change jar. Raise even more money by asking a local business to place a Haiti change jar at the register. Consider giving to organizations working in the following areas: Maternal Health, Education (early childhood through college), Sustainable Agricultural Development, Reforestation and other carbon-cutting projects.
Two of MAU’s top suggestions:
1. The Lambi Fund is working in Haiti long-term to support economic justice, democracy and sustainable development. Follow the @lambifund on twitter or become a facebook fan of The Lambi Fund of Haiti.
2. Partners in Health has been working on the ground in Haiti for 20 years partnering with poor communities to combat disease and poverty. Follow @pih_org on twitter, become a facebook fan of Partners in Health.
With the other hand: Add your voice to a call for complete and unconditional debt forgiveness.
For compelling reasons why a long-term investment is critical. And another one!
