Current Action: The President's Reality Check

President Bush recently presented his 2008 budget, asking for a record $700 billion for "security" spending (formerly known as military spending); a $130 billion increase over last year's budget. That's an outrageous amount of money*, in fact it's almost twice what we will spend on every other item in the discretionary budget: education, health and human services, international aid, etc. And, as MAU is fond of repeating, our "security" budget is more than all other military budgets in the world COMBINED.

MAUs are calling the White House comment line and our Senators and Representatives. Coast to coast, the word on the wire is, STOP THE FUNDING. Instead of committing more funds to a failing security plan, we have the opportunity to fully address global warming AND fund our committed share to the Millennium Development Goals, with money left over.
